Picture of CAPE OF GOOD HOPE ALTIMA SAUVIGNON BLANC 2023
The nose is bold and uncompromising in its intensity with nettles and grapefruit zest most prominent. The palate boasts a thrilling tension and vivacity. Taut, tangy lemon-lime and grapefruit twist. It’s light, crisp, and soft in a powerful yet lean way. Vivid acidity but beautifully balanced by the fruit flavours and lees. Lovely and crisp in its freshness with ample lip-smacking verve and zip. A deceptively light but powerful wine with a lingering tail. It will age well too.

Quince, poached peach and a whiff of vanilla on the nose. The palate is fresh, offering up the peach and quince fruitiness but with a lovely lime tang and vibrance. All of that is offset against a gentle background of creamy oak – which is subtly but beautifully integrated with charming vanilla and butterscotch notes. Textured and long, nothing Is overplayed with impressive harmony, palate weight and genuine refinement. Rewarding aftertaste.

Complex aromas of waxy lemon with a creamy nutty edge and subtle hint of dusty gravel track. The palate is bright, taut, lively, fresh and crisp. There is the anticipated lemon wax breadth which fleshes out the mid-palate but the zippy and vital acidity which retains focus and keeps everything poised. The finish is long with a gentle creaminess. Lovely concentration, focus and cohesion. A wine which will drink well now but also reward cellaring.

Appealing invitation of creamy orange and marmalade with a baked, brûlée note. That same torched or scorched sugar/caramel element is apparent on the palate, beautifully delivering on the promise of the nose – along with the vivid citrus and cream too. Adding to the overall impression of complexity and refinement is the gently roasted macadamia or cashew and butterscotch richness yet it remains delicate and lightly vivacious courtesy of lively acidity. The seamless and harmonious oak serves to support the fruit, gently cradling rather than dominating it. Poised, elegant and statuesque with a wonderfully long finish, this is a credit to the winemaker’s craft. It will cellar well and reward patience.

Aromatics of stone fruit with a nutty marzipan flavour and hints of oak are apparent too. The palate reflects the time the components of this blend spent in wood with a broad, creamy spiciness that complements the peach, quince, and gooseberry fruit flavours. Clean, structured, and powerful, the wine is kept in check with an acidic freshness. Lovely texture with good palate weight—the wine promises and delivers an elegant, creamy, long, and enjoyable mouthful.

Picture of CAPE OF GOOD HOPE VAN LILL CHENIN BLANC 2023
Seductive perfume of stone fruit, quince, spice and chamomile with the vaguest suggestion of lemon zest or oil. The palate is wonderfully rich and immediately engaging with its ripe, bold fruits: nectarine, sun-dried apricot and mango, a honeyed nuance too. There are creamy honeyed notes in perfect harmony with both the zesty vivacity and perkiness as well as the leesy, oak sheen.

Aromas reminiscent of Christmas pudding – spice, dark plum, cherry and berry fruit. Hint of mint too. That lively spice and plum pudding interplay continues in the mouth. The palate is compact and cohesive rather than big, bold and full bodied. The oak counters the ripe fruit, providing backbone and staying power with an impressively long, dry finish.

Picture of CAPE OF GOOD HOPE SNEEUWKRANS PINOT NOIR 2019
Sneeuwkrans Pinot noir presents with a perfumed floral nose, cherry blossom, ripe plum and raspberry aromatics. In typical Pinot Noir character, it displays approachability with complexity and subtle nuance, while remaining succulent and generous. There is a guile and mystery to this wine. Broad and laidback on entry, it offers bright red fruits but then also subtler, earthy, deep forest floor intensity. Silky, refined and pliable, with a powerful core and backbone from integrated oak. Poised and long rewarding.

Picture of CAPE OF GOOD HOPE RIEBEEKSRIVIER SYRAH 2018
A mix of ripe, dark blue and black berries and plum fruit, brushed with spice and herbs. Succulent entry to the mouth with immediate plump, plush blueberry and plum. That rounded berry vibrance makes way for a squeeze of chalky tannin and dry oak grip which balances the fruit well. Lovely inky licorice adds intrigue. Suave, genteel and elegant with a glossy, smoothly varnished long farewell.

Picture of CAPE OF GOOD HOPE RIEBEEKSRIVIER SOUTHERN SLOPES 2018
Inky intrigue to a somewhat subdued nose of shy black plum and spice – with a hint of fynbos in the backdrop. Plush entry to the mouth, rounded and appealing with ample juicy black plum notes. Those rich flavours are tempered by a pleasant spicy cedar grip. Structured, textured, but still taut and leashed, the wine is like the 2019, still somewhat tightly furled. It finishes with good length and an intriguing saline element.

This wine presents with bold, almost audacious spiciness coupled with blueberry and plum compote aromatics. The palate is similarly expressive and appealing with its vibrant spiciness.
