ANTHONIJ RUPERT CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2019

Leafy hedgerow fruit, graphite, spice and cedar with a tobacco leaf nuance on the nose. Complex and inviting. More ripe berry fruit is found in the mouth: cherry, youngberry, blackberry and plums. Pretty in its succulence and pliability. Vibrant spice adds to the complexity. The palate is softly textured and approachable, supple but also muscular with its squeeze of dry tannin from time in barrel. Lovely long, lingering finish which offers up graphite and dried herbs. Layered, complex and rich but also elegant and refined.

Bold purple plums, black cherries and perfume with subtle edge of cut flower stems on the nose. The palate is taut, needing a bit of time and air to reveal its strata of spicy purple and black berry fruits. There’s an oak edge which lends both spice and structure to the wine while acidity adds freshness and piquancy. Savoury, tangy and tasty with a long tail, it will reward patience.

Bright floral notes of cherry blossom and violet mingle with dark fruit, pencil shavings, cedar and spice aromatics. A plush entry to the palate with succulent plum and black cherry, dusted with spice. Refined, poised and structured, the oak frames the fruit well and also plays with the rich cocoa and cedar nuances. There’s a brooding power which remains in check. Complex and silky with a lingering finish.

Pale lemon colour, bright and clear, with a hypnotic steady stream of vigorous, fine bubbles. The nose offers up subtle orange blossom with marmalade and oyster shell nuances mingling with baked sourdough bread. Vibrant, energetic fizz with grapefruit, lemon and lime vivacity in the mouth. A trace of salinity is present too, adding to the enjoyment of the crunchy zip and vitality. It then segues into a richer, creamier, genteel and silky smooth mouthful of lees, toast and baked bread tinged with a twist of citrus zest. The maritime notes of briny sea air and oyster shell are present too. Succulent and fresh but also taut, crisp and dry. Lovely tension and restraint but with power and generosity too. Seamless integration and marvelous refinement and persistence of flavour.

A string of fine pearl bubbles rises steadily and vigorously in the demure blush and partridge eye-coloured wine. Subtle strawberry, raspberry and cherry aromas are brushed with a light floral as well as a leesy, toasty note. Entry on the palate is crisp, fresh, and vibrantly zesty, with ruby grapefruit and lemon as well as understated red fruit notes. The lovely zip and intensity of the acidity are tempered by the broader, creamy lees and biscuit notes, along with a marmalade tang on the tail. A chalky grip adds body to the layered palate. Rewardingly long aftertaste.
