L'ORMARINS APPLE EAU DE VIE 2013

Rich caramel-gold colour. Mellow whiffs of baked apple with tarte tatin spice highlights and just a delicate hint of flowers and macadamia nuts which entice on the nose. The palate is suitably spirituous with apple strudel-, marzipan-, caramel- and baked biscuit-flavours. Pleasant balance and gentle rich praline notes which linger for ages.

Beautiful amber gold colour. The nose is a study in subtlety: pear (both ripe fruit and shy blossom), almond and apricot pip nuttiness with spice-tinged dried pear fruit character. That same gently spiced character is found on the warm, rich spirited palate. There’s an initial flare of warming cinnamon heat that then subsides to reveal vanilla, pear and crushed autumn leaves. Beautiful integration of wood makes the mouthful só harmonious.

Pure, unadulterated heady litchi perfume! No Ersatz essence notes whatsoever. Light potpourri whiff adds dimension and depth to the nose. The same holds true for the flavour. Undoubtedly distilled litchi spirit, it’s tropically fruity with an almost Turkish Delight exoticism. It’s smooth and gentle without any harsh spirit bite or aggression. The spirit lingers long in the mouth, finishing dry yet leaving a beautiful distinct flavour memory.

Appealing playful lightness of pear and nectarine on the nose. Tangy, light and zesty, the mouthful is fresh and succulent. Intense lemon zip accompanies pear drop and stone fruit vibrance. Lively, clean and crisp with a gentle lees suggestion. Lightweight and easy to enjoy. Pleasantly dry to the end.

Spicy red cherry and fruitcake aromas, with a brush of tobacco leaf and a gentle hint of floral overlay. Tempting and subtle. Abundant cherry and plum fruit flavours are tempered by a well-judged, Italianate, dry tannin grip. That grip is balanced by the ripeness of the fruit and a genuine succulence, which characterizes this wine. Textured and plush there is a distinct backbone of spicy oak that frames the mouthful beautifully. Lovely fruitcake, cedar and spice can be found on the layered, nuanced palate. Superb length of flavour that lingers.
